System Flushing
In accordance with industry best practice and Virginia Health Department recommendations, Rapidan Service Authority performs routine flushing of our water distribution systems for various reasons:
- Testing for proper operation of fire hydrants. The local fire departments and homeowners rely on RSA to keep its fire hydrants in proper working order. Maintenance crews must routinely inspect and flow hydrants to be sure hydrants will work when needed. Inoperable hydrants are "bagged" and repaired as soon as possible.
- Removing sediment from the pipes. Compounds such as Iron and Manganese are naturally present in water from the Rapidan River or groundwater sources. The treatment plant is effective at removing the vast majority of these compounds prior to delivery of finished drinking water. However, they will accumulate over time throughout the distribution system. When these deposits are disturbed by water main breaks, firefighting, or other events that cause the flow of water to change speed or direction, they may cause discoloration of water. RSA performs routine flushing to clear such debris in a controlled manner.
- Maintaining a sufficient chlorine residual. Chlorine is used to disinfect water at the water treatment facility. State and Federal regulations require that a free chlorine residual be present throughout the distribution system. This inhibits microbial growth that could cause illness. During warmer months, the chlorine residual dissipates more quickly. "Dead-end" mains or areas that do not experience much flow may need to be flushed via fire hydrants in order to bring in fresher water.
Routine quarterly flushing events are shown on our Calendar of Events; however, RSA may perform system flushing at any time as part of an inspection or water quality program.
Be aware that hydrant flushing will disturb sediment in the distribution lines. If we are flushing a hydrant near your home, do not be alarmed by brief changes in your water's clarity. Rest assured that your water is safe to drink. To clear up this discolored water, we advise customers to flush a cold water tap until the water runs clear. If it takes longer than 15 minutes, please contact RSA by phone or by using the Contact Us form in order to report the issue.
To receive a bill credit for flushed water, please use the "Flushing Report Form" on this website or call the RSA office at 540-972-2133.
