Wilderness Wastewater Treatment Plant - Odor Complaints

4/16/2026

WILDERNESS SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

There have been a number of complaints recently regarding the Wilderness Sewage Treatment Plant and odor.

Sewage treatment plants often experience increased odor during seasonal transitions, particularly in spring and fall. This is primarily caused by shifting water temperatures and typically occurs around this time each year and subsides as the treatment process stabilizes under changing conditions.

Several factors contribute to these seasonal odors:

  • Spring/Fall Turnover: As colder water sinks, it displaces warmer, settled material, releasing trapped gases.
  • Warm Weather: Rising temperatures increase biological activity and anaerobic decomposition, resulting in stronger odors.
  • Low Atmospheric Dispersal: High humidity or stagnant air conditions can trap odors near the ground, making them more noticeable.

The Wilderness sewage treatment plant is in compliance with its VPDES permit. There is nothing broken or malfunctioning at the plant and the staff have increased the aeration system to full capacity to help minimize odors as much as possible; however, recent temperature increases have intensified the issue.

There have been a large number of new homes built in close proximity to the sewage treatment plant, and we understand the community’s concern.  We will continue to work to address these seasonal challenges.

Further RSA will engage an engineering consultant to evaluate additional measures to further mitigate odors and improve overall system performance.
